In an interview with The Guardian, Kai Havertz of Chelsea Football Club revealed his deep affection for donkeys and explained why some of his teammates refer to him as “Donkey”.

The 23-year-old German footballer launched the Kai Havertz Stifung charity, which focuses on animal welfare, youth development, and elderly care, and cited donkeys as his source of inspiration.

Havertz disclosed that his teammates call him “Donkey”, not because of his football skills but because of his special relationship with the animal.

He described donkeys as calm creatures, and he related to their serene demeanor. Havertz received three real donkeys as gifts when he turned 18, after having a stuffed animal as a child. He stated that he used his love for donkeys as a form of escapism from the pressure of professional football and visited a sanctuary to find peace.

Despite experiencing inconsistent form since his record-breaking transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea, Havertz scored in his last three games before the international break against Borussia Dortmund, Leicester City, and Everton.

He urged Chelsea fans to be patient with new signings, acknowledging the challenges of adjusting to a new club and league.

Havertz also reflected on the changes he has witnessed at Chelsea over the past year, including a new ownership group, manager, staff, and teammates.

He drew comparisons between the current squad and the Champions League-winning team of 2021, in which he scored the decisive goal against Manchester City in the final.

Chelsea currently sit in 10th place in the Premier League and have been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions, making the Champions League their only chance of winning a trophy this season. They face Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

Havertz will look to contribute to Chelsea’s success in their upcoming match against Aston Villa, as they seek to climb the Premier League table and secure a spot in the Champions League for next season.
