Although Ligue 1 is generally dominated by Paris Saint-Germain, there has been the occasional surprise where players from other teams pulled off the unimaginable.

That was not the case in 2021-22, though, as Kylian Mbappe saw off Wissam Ben Yedder, Martin Terrier and Moussa Dembele to win the Ligue 1 Golden Boot.

It must be noted that Mbappe is among the favourites to win the coveted individual trophy once more this term, but he faces plenty of competition.Lille's Jonathan David celebrates scoring their second goal against Wolfsburg on December 8, 2021

There’s PSG team-mates Lionel Messi and Neymar who have been scoring at will throughout their careers, there’s the aforementioned Ben Yedder and the likes of Jonathan David a Lille and Alexandre Lacazette at Lyon are proven goal scorers, too.

Arsenal and Manchester United have both been heavily linked with the Canada international Jonathan while Real Madrid are also thought to be admirers of the centre-forward.

David has been in impressive form for Lille during the 2022-23 campaign, scoring 21 goals and contributing four assists in 29 appearances in all competitions.

The Canadian struck a hat-trick in Lille’s 3-3 draw with Lyon on Friday night, and he said after the match that his immediate focus was on helping his team climb the Ligue 1 table.

Although David admitted that a move to the Premier League or La Liga would be a “dream”.

Speaking “The furthest I can see for the moment is the next game and helping Lille get back into top four,” Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano quotes David as saying following his treble against Lyon.

“Saturday mornings growing up in Canada were about the Premier League and La Liga. Premier League and La Liga are every kid’s dream.”

David’s three goals on Friday evening saw him become Lyon’s highest goalscorer in the 21st century on 53, moving past Eden Hazard in the process.

“This isn’t something I set out to do, but it feels great. I have a lot of respect for Eden Hazard as a player, and to have broken his record here at home is very special,” he told reporters when asked about the record.
