Jeremie Frimpong of Leverkusen runs with the ball during the Bundesliga match between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and VfB Stuttgart at BayArena on November...Report have shown that Former Celtic flyer Jeremie Frimpong continues to go from strength-to-strength in Germany with Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso full of praise for the Dutchman’s relentless productivity, speaking via the Bundesliga Highlights Show.

Although Full-backs tend to be that little bit more attack-minded these days but Frimpong is taking that to a whole new level at the Bay Arena.

Before this season, the Netherlands U21 international had only ever scored five senior goals. He has already beaten that tally in 2022/23 alone; notching for the seventh time in the last six months as the Alonso resurgence continued during Sunday’s 3-2 win at Werder Bremen.

Add those seven goals to his nine assists and Frimpong, from his rampaging wing-back role, can now seriously challenge Trent Alexander-Arnold, Achraf Hakimi and co for the title of Europe’s most creative right-sided defender.

Speaking “Jeremie Frimpong is a key player,” smiles former Real Madrid, Liverpool and Spain playmaker Alonso.
“He gives us this possibility to attack from the wing. He attracts (defenders) and, from these positions, he is very dangerous. He’s scoring many goals.

“We are so happy with him.”

It must be noted that Celtic certainly have a knack for unearthing right-sided defensive diamonds. Frimpong, following his £11 million move to Leverkusen, was replaced by Josip Juranovic. And once the Croatian departure for Union Berlin in January, in came another in the shape of Alistair Johnston.

Frimpong could be on the move again before long, with Spanish giants Real Madrid reportedly interested. A summer switch to Manchester United seems unlikely, however; Aaron Wan-Bissaka forcing his way back into Erik ten Hag’s thinking.

“A fast player with incredible acceleration and good technique,” Leverkusen director Simon Rolfes said late last year.

“His ability to accelerate and decelerate is world-class. If you’re world-class at something at Celtic and in the Bundesliga, that’s also the case in other leagues. There were other things he had to improve when he came. And he has doing fantastic. He has the right ambition to work on himself.”
